This is a review of NBA Playgrounds for the Nintendo Switch by 8-Bit Eric. NBA Playgrounds' is 2-on-2 arcade action. Like NBA Jam, There are over-the-top animations for dunks, pushing and throwing of elbows, backflips with the ball, each match only lasts for three minutes. There are different outdoor settings, new york, japan, etc.
In this game success of shots is determined by pressing and holding the “shoot” button for just the right length of time. Let it go early or late and the shot will probably miss, get it spot on and you'll be awarded with an extra point for each basket.
There is a lottery pick gauge that you build up the meter by doing things like throwing alley-oops and blocking shots to get a random power-up. The single player experience offers an exhibition mode,
and a career mode in which you need to complete a handful of “tournaments” by winning a few matches in a row.
Winning matches earns you packs of cards, and these packs of cards have new players to add to your team. Players can be upgraded through XP which is earned by simply playing games with them. Playgrounds does run at a stable 60fps, but it doesn’t really matter. This game is just awkward in it’s graphic style, and a lot of short cuts were made in it’s design. In handheld mode, character models are blurry and unfocused.
The Switch version As of this video, you won't be able to play online. The feature is disabled, although it's scheduled to be patched in very soon. There is a delay before play can be restarted after every basket. The game doesn't restart until the defending team's players are sent back to half court, which means you will often sit there waiting to pass the ball.
Not to mention, the A.I. team mate in this game is completely horrible. The A.I. opponents however, kicked my ass several times. the opposing team always seemed to be in the right place to intercept a passed ball, and seemed to have zero difficulty stealing despite the stats of the player they were assigned.
When you get rid of the poor AI and replace them with friends in local multiplayer things get better fast. It’s not a bad game but it’s not great either. If you’re a fan of this style of basketball, I say go for it.
